What is the difference between stainless steel 310 and 310S
high-temperature pipe/tube?
Stainless steel 310 and 310S are popular grades of stainless
steel specifically designed to withstand high temperatures.
While they share many similarities, there are slight differences
between them.
Stainless steel 310 contains more chromium (around 24-26%) and nickel (around 19-22%) than 310S. This higher chromium and nickel content imparts excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance properties to stainless steel 310, making it suitable for high-temperature applications. Additionally, it provides good strength and toughness at elevated temperatures.

On the other hand, stainless steel 310S contains a lower carbon content (0.08% maximum) compared to 310, which reduces the potential for carbide precipitation during welding or high-temperature operations. This lower carbon content also helps to improve resistance against sensitization, which can lead to corrosion in certain environments.
Due to its lower carbon content, stainless steel 310S offers better resistance to intergranular corrosion, making it ideal for applications where the material is exposed to sensitizing conditions, such as during welding or in environments containing high levels of sulfur.
